apple platformBy Apple’s reckoning, iOS 7 is the adoption platform for more than 80% devices from the manufacturer. As per the new numbers by Apple, the acceptance rate for the latest iOS7 version has been incredible. Today only 17% of Apple devices are running on iOS 6 and the rest (constituting only 3% of the devices) have earlier versions installed in them. The given stat has been published by Apple based on the result measured by the App Store during a 7‑day period of time.

The iOS 7 rolled out in September 2013 and addressed majority of the complaints associated with the earlier iOS6. It has just been 5 months and the version has already outpaced iOS 6 in leaps. In case of iOS 6 it had taken more than 6 months to reach 80% of the users. The statistics however don’t cover all the iOS users in the world. The ones that have been most active are only been accounted for. The figures were measured in a seven day period between January 19th, 2014 and January 26th, 2014. Users who have checked the Apple store in this duration have been brought into the figures.

As compared to Google’s latest KitKat (Android 4.4), the iOS7 figures are far more impressive. Android 4.4 has been able to reach only 1.4% of android users and the 4.1 version, Jelly Bean OS still has the highest popularity with 35.9 % of users.

Another point to be noted here is that not all iOS 6 devices come with the capability of being upgraded to iOS7. This includes the fourth generation iPod and iPhone 3GS which were recently dropped from the iOS7 support list. For the other active users who have the option to upgrade but haven’t, there seems to be a likely reason to hold off. As per Apple, around 64% of users have upgraded from iOS 6 to iOS 7 between September 18th and October 22, 2013. The number had increased to 74% in December 5th, 2013.

Perhaps, some users are still waiting for the market launch of iOS7.1, the first major update to the iOS7. The iOS 7.1 is presently in fourth beta development stage and is expected to be released in the next couple of months. It probably won’t be a long wait before iOS 7 hits the 90% mark. But, users are also getting rumors about another OS, the iOS 8. So, the cycle is meant to be continued.
