If you are the owner of a small coffee shop but still haven’t been able to provide your customers with free Wi-Fi service, chances are that footfall has been disappointing. However, it’s time to buckle up as Facebook has launched a program wherein small business owners can install Wi-Fi service for free. Facebook and Netgear have announced a partnership that allows Netgear routers to be turned into Wi-Fi hotspots. Customers will just need to “check-in” on the merchants Facebook Page to get access to internet! This seems an incredible opportunity both for the customer and the merchant.
It is a win-win situation for both. With this program, Facebook gets more engagement, merchants have more action and their Facebook address is more heard and lastly the customers gets free internet. Even if customers want to keep their coffee breaks secret, they will just need to turn on the privacy to “only me”. Businesses that haven’t been able to or haven’t bothered to provide free internet to customers now have an option that can’t be denied!
This however isn’t the first time that such a program has been launched. Facebook has previously partnered with Cisco Meraki routers in 2013. The decision to expand the partnership to Netgear only means that the program has been running quite well.
Whatever may be the reasons behind Facebook’s move, thousands of businesses and millions of customers will get the advantage. This is certainly a new way in which networking is used creatively for business goals. For Facebook, this does push the largely ignored “Check In” option and the simultaneous marketing. Everyone would like to know more about you (provided that you are open to share) and benefit through networking.
How it Works?
The process has been designed such that once you connect to the internet by checking into the merchant’s page, the user is handed back to the router and is no more in the picture. After the initial authentication, all the traffic you choose to launch is completely out of Facebook’s network.
